Equality and Diversity – definitions

Definitions of Equal Opportunities and Diversity

Equality

Equality is fundamentally about creating a fairer society where all can participate on an equal basis. It is supported by a legislative framework designed to address unfair discrimination, which is defined as ‘less favourable treatment, based on membership of a particular group.’ In some circumstances, positive action is encouraged to address such discrimination. It covers; Equal Access, Equal Treatment, Equal Participation and Equal Outcomes.

Diversity

Diversity is about recognising and valuing people’s differences, and creating a working environment that recognises, respects and values difference for the benefit of the organisation and the individual. Equality and diversity are no interchangeable but are inter-dependent. There can be no equality of opportunity if difference is not recognised, respected and valued.
