A 10-step approach to ethical decision making

  1. Ask, is the question an ethical one?
  2. List all the people in involved
  3. Generate solutions to the problem: rule nothing out
  4. Assess the advantages and disadvantages of each solution (using thefour principles)
  5. Make a decision (using consequentialist and deontological theory)
  6. Discuss your decision with colleagues
  7. Check the precedents: GMC, legal, etc
  8. Make a final decision
