Staff Trainee Assessment Rating (STAR)

This questionnaire was designed by Dr Dave Gill from Belford. It is a tool to assess formatively the attitudes of the GP registrar with PHCT staff. I usually hand this out in the 2nd or 3rd month and it is returned anonymously.

The results are fed back to the trainee in a collated form (ie an average “score”) but please note that this is not a quantitative assessment. “Scores” can be compared to other trainees in a qualitative way too. Obviously, the feedback may require considerable skill on the part of the trainer, particularly if the results are poor: seeappraisal skills.

If the tool shows areas for improvement, I may repeat the exercise in the 5th month of training, although results seem a bit lower at this time anyway – maybe because the staff have got to know the GP registrar a bit better!

Why not try it out using yourself and your partners as the subject of the questionnaire too? It may produce some interesting results! We found that trainers almost always score lower than their trainees – food for thought!
